YG takes a few subtle shots at Joey Bada$$ and Diddy in this track.
The West Coast is on fire right now. In my opinion, Los Angeles boasts the best rapper in the game with Kendrick Lamar, one of the most entertaining teams in sports with the Lakers, and a fresh wave of rappers gaining buzz—some even thanks to Joey Bada$$ dissing them. One of the coast’s most consistent heavyweights, YG, just dropped a true West Coast anthem called “HOLLYWOOD,” featuring Shoreline Mafia—and it’s a track the city can be proud of.
Let me get this out of the way: there’s not enough dancing in hip-hop right now, and the “HOLLYWOOD” music video brings that energy back. The beat practically demands it, with its infectious rhythm and menacing West Coast bounce—shoutout to Ty Dolla $ign for producing this s**t.
The track kicks off with OhGeesy delivering a gritty, high-energy hook that pays homage to Los Angeles, its streets, and his readiness to squabble. YG follows with a verse where he reps his set, flexes about having more bottles in his house than Diddy (no baby oil), and shouts out his city with pride. OhGeesy returns with another verse, reinforcing his street credibility, followed by Fenix Flexin, who taps into that raw LA energy while talking about getting women to do some very unholy things. YG closes things out with another verse, firing subtle shots at Joey Bada$$ and possibly even Neo from The Matrix.
At the end of the day, “HOLLYWOOD” thrives on its catchy chorus, sharp verses, and that hypnotic beat. It’s a feel-good anthem for LA and a reminder that the West is still very much in the building.
