Polo G Keeps It Real In “Thug Memorials”

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Y’all aren’t appreciating Polo G’s music enough.

It’s easy to forget that Polo G dropped an album earlier this year. HOOD POET hit streaming platforms in August, but it didn’t get the attention it deserved, either in sales or from music critics. Maybe it’s because he took a hiatus and people lost track of him, or perhaps other artists are now doing his emotional bag even better. Regardless, Polo G isn’t backing down. Today, he’s back with a fresh single, “Thug Memorials.”

In “Thug Memorials,” Polo G, as he’s done for years, reflects on the trials and tribulations he’s faced in the streets. Particularly, he touches on the people he’s lost, the paranoia that haunts him, and the constant beef he had to stay ready for. He also discusses his current mindset, which is laser-focused on securing the bag.

Very interestingly, this track flips R. Kelly’s classic “I Wish.” In fact, you can hear some of Kells’ vocals (Is he being uncancelled, y’all?). As for Polo, he sounds extra melancholic throughout the song, delivering melodic raps that are designed to resonate more with your heart than your ears. That said, his raps still have a slight edge to them.

I hope Polo G has a therapist. There’s no way someone should be depressed this many days in a year.
